Recent research found that the most successful weight loss participants spent less than 15 minutes per day tracking their food intake. "Logging what you eat increases awareness of your consumption and how you feel during those eating occasions," Gorin explains. Over time, you'll notice patterns and be able to make wiser choices, like opting for a satiating apple with peanut butter as a snack instead of an unsatisfying cookie.

Ditch the "Cheat Day" Mentality

You may be tempted to designate a "cheat day" where you allow yourself to binge on off-limits foods, but this strategy usually does more harm than good. "Your diet should feel satisfying so you can sustain it long-term, and that includes beloved soul-nourishing foods," says dietitian Bonnie Taub-Dix. Cheat days often lead to overeating, which can wreak havoc on your metabolism. A truly balanced approach includes room for treats in moderation.

Be Wary of Trendy Food Swaps

Cauliflower rice and zucchini noodles may be all the rage, but traditional grains have their place in a healthy diet too. "Carbs are villainized, but they're an important food group for energy, fiber, B vitamins, and your sanity," says Taub-Dix. While decreasing processed carbs is wise, there's no need to nix nutrient-dense whole grains unless medically necessary. The same goes for other food groups - balance is key.

Streamlining your weight loss approach doesn't mean eliminating enjoyment. In fact, the most successful plans give you flexibility to eat foods you love while building sustainable, health-promoting habits.
